Viswanathan Anand, often called “Vishy” Anand, is India’s first chess Grandmaster (GM) and a five-time World Chess Champion. Born on December 11, 1969, in Chennai, he became a Grandmaster in 1988, marking the beginning of India’s rise in the global chess arena. Known for his lightning-fast calculations and adaptability, Anand has won multiple prestigious titles, including the FIDE World Championship and the Rapid Chess Championship. His influence has inspired an entire generation of Indian chess players, making India one of the strongest chess nations today.
He once played a blindfold simultaneous chess match against 39 opponents—an incredible feat requiring immense memory and concentration. Additionally, in 1998, he defeated a supercomputer, Fritz 5.32, in a chess match, proving that human intuition and strategy could still outclass artificial intelligence at that time. His ability to remain at the top for over three decades, adapting to different formats and playing styles, is truly legendary.
