Death Anniversary of Shaheed Udham Singh

Puzzle cube mural made of Shaheed Udham Singh

The day marks the death anniversary of Shaheed Udham Singh, an Indian revolutionary known for assassinating Michael O’Dwyer as a revenge for the ruthless massacre of hundreds of peaceful protestors at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar.

On 13th April 1919, twenty-years-old Udham Singh along with his friends were serving water to a large gathering at Jallianwala Bagh. Thousands had assembled to protest the arrest of proindependence activists and the Rowlatt Act. The gathering was specially large because of the local harvest festival of Baisakhi. R. E. H. Dyer, who was then a temporary brigadier general, with his troops surrounded the Jallianwala Bagh park especially the exits to prevent any escape. Without provocation, Dyer ordered his troops to fire indiscriminately at the crowd.
Hundreds of innocents, which included men, women and, horrifically, even children died. Some estimates put the number of people killed at 1,500. Having witness the appalling and wicked crime, Shaheed Udham Singh swore revenge on that day.

The mural of Shaheed Udham Singh celebrates his single-minded determination to avenge the ghastly act. This iconic photo of Shaheed Udham Singh captures his strong personality, and its authenticity is evident through his clear facial features.
