Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a major Hindu festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil. It typically falls in September or October, marking the end of Navratri. The festival is most famous for commemorating Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana as narrated in the epic Ramayana. On this day, large effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakarna, and his son Meghanada are burnt to symbolize the destruction of evil forces
It is celebrated across India with diverse traditions. In Mysore, the festival includes a grand procession, while in West Bengal, it’s marked by the final day of Durga Puja celebrations. The day also holds significance for many communities as it is considered an auspicious time for starting new ventures and seeking blessings for success, as the day marks the triumph of virtue and righteousness.
