International Literacy Day, celebrated on September 8, highlights the importance of education and literacy as tools for empowerment and social progress. The day reminds the world that reading and writing are fundamental human rights and essential for building inclusive, knowledgeable societies.
Savitribai Phule, India’s first female teacher and a pioneer of women’s education, dedicated her life to spreading literacy and equality. Along with her husband Jyotirao Phule, she opened the first girls’ school in India in 1848.
