Puzzle cube Mural of Lord Mahaveer

Lord Mahaveer (or Mahavira), also known as Vardhamana, was the 24th and last Tirthankara (spiritual teacher) of Jainism, born in 599 BCE in present-day Bihar, India. He is revered as a profound spiritual leader who propagated the principles of non-violence (ahimsa), truth (satya), non-attachment (aparigraha), and asceticism. At the age of 30, he renounced his royal privileges and embarked on a 12-year journey of intense meditation and self-discipline, ultimately attaining Kevala Jnana (omniscience).

Lord Mahaveer’s teachings emphasized the importance of compassion, self-control, and the liberation of the soul from the cycle of birth and rebirth (moksha). His philosophy laid the foundation for Jainism, inspiring millions to follow a path of righteousness and spiritual enlightenment.

Choosing an image of Lord Mahaveer was not that straight-forward. I had to make sure that he is not confused with Lord Buddha. With that in mind, I selected a well-known marble statue of the God. This image has clear facial features which are easily attributed to Lord Mahaveer and help differentiating him from Lord Buddha.

Carefully going through the images I realised today that three features differentiate Lord Mahaveer and Gautam Buddha. Mahaveerji has a slight smile, a smaller hair bun and his eyes are open. While Buddha Bhagwan is typically represented with eyes closed, a somber expression (deep in meditation) and, relatively speaking, a larger hair bun.
