Puzzle cube mural made on Muharram
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and holds great significance for Muslims around the world. It is considered one of the four sacred months in which warfare is forbidden. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, is especially important, as it marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in the Battle of Karbala. For Shia Muslims, this day is a time of deep mourning, reflection, and remembrance of the sacrifices made by Imam Hussain and his companions for justice and righteousness. Many participate in processions, recite elegies, and reenact the events of Karbala to express their grief.
For Sunni Muslims, Muharram is also a significant month, though observed differently. Many remember Ashura as the day when Prophet Musa (Moses) and his followers were saved from Pharaoh’s tyranny. Some fast on this day, following the tradition of Prophet Muhammad, who encouraged fasting on the 9th and 10th or the 10th and 11th of Muharram. Regardless of sect, the month serves as a reminder of faith, resilience, and the importance of standing against oppression.
