National Mathematics Day is celebrated annually on December 22 in India to honor the birthday of the legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The day was officially declared by the Government of India in 2012 to recognize Ramanujan’s remarkable contributions to the field of mathematics. Ramanujan, who was largely self-taught, made groundbreaking discoveries in areas like number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. His work continues to influence various branches of mathematics even today.
His ability to intuitively discover complex mathematical formulas, some of which were later proven to be true through rigorous mathematical analysis. One of his most impressive legacies is the Ramanujan Prime and the Ramanujan-Hardy Number (1729), known as the “most interesting number,” which was a testament to his genius.
