Rubik’s cube mural of Rani Karnavati

Raksha Bandhan is a beloved Indian festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. The word “Raksha” means protection, and “Bandhan” means bond, making it a celebration of the protective relationship siblings share. On this day, sisters tie a rakhi (sacred thread) around their brother’s wrist, symbolizing their love and prayers for his well-being, while brothers, in turn, promise to protect their sisters. The festival is celebrated with much joy and fervor, with families coming together for prayers, sweets, and gifts.

A historical connection to Raksha Bandhan is the story of Rani Karnavati, the queen of Mewar in the 16th century. When her kingdom was threatened by Bahadur Shah of Gujarat, she sent a rakhi to Emperor Humayun, asking for his help. Touched by her gesture, Humayun immediately set out to defend her kingdom. This story highlights the festival’s deeper symbolism of protection, trust, and unity beyond familial bonds.
