Puzzle cube mural of Shaheed Udham Singh

Shaheed Udham Singh Jayanti is celebrated on December 26th to honor the birth anniversary of Udham Singh, a revolutionary freedom fighter known for avenging the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. Born in 1899 in Sunam, Punjab, Udham Singh witnessed the horrific massacre in 1919, where British troops under General Dyer killed hundreds of unarmed Indians. Determined to seek justice, he waited for over 21 years before assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, in London on March 13, 1940. His fearless act made him a symbol of India’s fight against British oppression.

Udham Singh used multiple aliases, including “Ram Mohammad Singh Azad”, representing Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh unity in India’s struggle for freedom. Another fascinating detail is that after his execution in 1940, his remains were kept in Britain for 34 years before being repatriated to India in 1974. Today, he is remembered as a martyr whose undying spirit continues to inspire generations.
