D.Y. Chandrachud is the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI), appointed on November 9, 2022. Known for his progressive judgments and strong stance on constitutional rights, he has played a key role in landmark cases related to privacy, LGBTQ+ rights, and women’s equality. His leadership emphasizes judicial transparency and legal reforms.
He is the first CJI whose father, Y.V. Chandrachud, also served as India’s Chief Justice (1978–1985). This makes them the first father-son duo to hold the highest judicial position in India’s history.
