World Music Day – Begum Akhtar

Rubik’s cube mosaic made of 225 cubes of Begum Akhtar

World Music Day, celebrated annually on June 21, is a global event dedicated to the universal language of music. Originating in France in 1982 as “Fête de la Musique,” the day encourages musicians of all skill levels to perform in public spaces, promoting cultural exchange and artistic expression. The event has since spread worldwide, with concerts, festivals, and street performances held in various cities. World Music Day emphasizes the power of music to connect people across different backgrounds, fostering unity and joy through shared melodies.

The mural made is of Begum Akhtar (1914–1974) who was a legendary Indian singer known as the Mallika-e-Ghazal (Queen of Ghazals). She was a master of ghazals, dadras, and thumris, blending classical and light classical music with deep emotional expression. Born in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh, she trained under renowned musicians and gained national fame for her soulful voice. Despite personal struggles, including a break from music after marriage, she returned to the stage, leaving an indelible mark on Indian music. She was honored with the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan for her contributions.
